First Plank

Fitting the First Plank
As the build progresses I dry fit each piece and take more and more measurements before committing myself to mixing the epoxy. The first plank was dry fitted, measured against the frame positions and then glued and screwed in place.

Using a jigsaw a slot was cut in the plank for the centreboard. Care was taken to cut the slot narrower than required to avoid damaging the epoxy coated sides of the centreboard case.

The slot was finished to size using a rasp. String was wound around the end of the rasp to pad it to avoid damaging the epoxy coated sides of the centreboard case

My first attempt at glassing the centreboard slot failed as the glass just wouldn't lie against the wood around the corner of the slot. I pulled the glass tape off before the epoxy cured so I could have a second attempt.

A posting to the SFD Builders Sailors yahoo group provided the answer. Round off the corner of the slot (the plans show this but I had missed this detail), then epoxy the wood and let the epoxy cure until it is tacky so the glass tape will stick to it.

Easy when you know how, impossible when you don't.
